Single ply has all but taken over from the old ‘three layer’ felting systems which when laid correctly are an adequate way to waterproof flat roof extensions and the like even though the average serviceable life was as low as 6-8 years. However they are inherently dangerous with the hot bitumen temperature in excess of 240 degrees Celsius. The risk of fire and accidental injury always present. After a relatively short period of time moss and algae take root in the chippings reducing the solar reflective properties and becoming a bit of an eyesore.

Single Ply, with a life expectancy of 30 years has none of these drawbacks and if damage to the membrane occurs ( window cleaners ladder maybe  or falling masonry ) the damage can be seen easily and repaired in minutes saving expensive repairs due to water damage.
